East Liverpool Historical Society

Gary Cornell, a retired East Liverpool Fire Department firefighter is also the Fire Department's historian. He has written much about what he has learned about the history of the East Liverpool Fire Department and various fires that have taken place in East Liverpool.

We were lucky enough to spend time with Mr. Cornell and be able to read over a part of what he has written titled "Great Fires", a twenty-eight page section that he describes with the following words: "This is a summary of some of the major fires that have occurred in East Liverpool. In the early years a fire must have caused at least $10,000 in property loss to make the list, with a few exceptions. In later years the loss must be much greater and usually only commercial property is listed."

The earliest fire that makes the list "THE CATHOLIC CHURCH FIRE" that occurred on "Palm Sunday, March 9th, 1845."

The most recent fire included was "THE ALLISON APARTMENT BUILDING. . . on December 22, 1998."

In between there are 100 other fires listed and given brief summations. The great fire of 1905 is given a nice long detailed summation.

To protect the integrity of his work, in case he decides to publish said work in the future, we are only going to cover twelve fires here and give a excerpt from his summation of each.

A few of the fires were already mentioned here before we talked with Gary, including the American Theater Fire, The Glass House Fire. the steamer Winchester fire, The Adamant Porcelain Fire and the Old Mill fire at Rock's Springs Park (We will add some of his summation of that fire to what we already have since there is a interesting side story there as well.)

We have also obtained some pictures from the East Liverpool Fire Department photograph archives to go along with some pictures we had obtained from Bob Lloyd of Wellsville previously. These will be included in the twelve fires we have selected to include here.

The twelve we have decided to include are Great Fire of 1905, Protestant Methodist Church 1921, Milligan 1925, Trenle Pottery 1941, Woodbine Laundry 1949, Dairyland 1957, Riverview Greenhouse 1963, Webber Way, Coca Cola Bottling Plant 1963, Diamond Fire 1968, Golden Star Dairy Webber Way 1970, Heimies Corner 1974, Wetzel's 1980.

Legally speaking framing is still in a murky area of the law though there have been court cases in which framing has been seen as violation of copyright law. Many cases that were taken to court ended up settling out-of-court with the one doing the framing agreeing to cease framing and to just use a regular link to the other site.
